*** NEXT EVENT *** (SCROLL DOWN): Jure Pukl's Slavic Soul Trio featuring Christine Tobin and Phil Robson!!

August 25th (Wed): Jure Pukl's Slavic Soul Trio featuring Christine Tobin and Phil Robson

A very special, first-time collaboration between the musical worlds of one of mainland Europe's top reedsmen, Jure Pukl with 'the jewel of the London jazz scene' Christine Tobin, mixing contemporary jazz and improvisation with voice, poetry, and song. With UK Ace (and recent Parliamentary Jazz Award 'Musician of the Year' Winner) Phil Robson on guitars alongside first call Austrian drummer Klemens Marktl, this genre defying music will showcase arrangements from Pukl and Tobin's own songbook, specifically reworked for this meeting. Expect dense yet ear pleasing harmonies, Irish and Slavic melodies, songs and rhythms, and poetry and compositions as modern as the minute in a welcomed melting pot of musical culture and ideas.

Jure Pukl is a Slovenian born tenor saxophonist who currently resides between the Big Apple and Vienna, Austria. A protege of the legendary George Garzone, Jure has performed in the US and Europe with such artists as Aaron Goldberg, Jeremy Pelt, Mark Turner, and Dave Liebman. His music is an ecclectic mix of contemporary jazz and the soulful Slavic rhythms and harmonies of his homeland, and also conceptually influenced by some of the most genre breaking jazz musicians: Steve Lehman and Rudresh Mahanthappa. He has released 5 critically acclaimed albums, and his most recent features wunderkind drummer, and Roy Hayne's grandson, Marcus Gilmore. Jure's tenor sound is rich and beautiful, and he uses his virtuosic technique with wit and aplomb, with strong emphasis on melody and motivic development.

Described by BBC Music Magazine as 'one of the most gifted and original singer/songwriters in today's jazz world, Irish-born singer-songwriter Christine Tobin is based in the UK and spends her time between London and the beautiful Kent coast. Her style, although rooted in jazz, draws on a broad range of influences from West Africa to Brazil (Oumou Sangare, Fela Kuti, Elis Regina). Her sound is rich, authentic, deeply expressive, and praised for both her use of poetry in compositions and her golden voice. Much of her repertoire is self-penned and Tobin has received many accolades for her skills as a writer and arranger. Romantic and radical, Christine is a musical free spirit who blurs the lines to create her own unique style that is streetwise and eclectic. In 2008 she was named Best Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards. She has been invited to record and work with: Billy Childs, BBC Big Band, Mike Gibbs, Django Bates, Kenny Wheeler, Nigel Kennedy, Billy Hart, Julian Arguelles, Tim Garland, Gary Husband, Phil Robson, Liam Noble, Hans Koller, etc. To date, she has recorded seven albums for Babel, one of the UK 's most dynamic and creative indie labels.
